The Cost of Overusing Your Strengths – Group Coaching Program

$

You are used to hearing about the importance of knowing and leveraging your strengths.

$

You have been recognized and rewarded by using your strengths.

$

You also know that sometimes too much of a good thing is not optimal.

$

You may feel that you have worked so hard for what you want and have not yet accomplished it.

$

You may have noticed that you can be sabotaged by perfectionism, overachievement, and exaggerated pleasing tendencies that lead you to procrastination, burnout, and inability to say NO.

When your strengths are overused or misused, they become your liabilities or weaknesses.

You can be very good at something and as you grow in your career some of those skills, traits, and habits can hold you back or be counterproductive as you transition to higher levels of responsibility.

You may have heard the phrase that is the title of my friend Marshall Goldsmith’s book “What Got You Here, Won’t Get You There.”

You may have been surprised by feedback you did not recognize as blind spots.

You probably focus on what to do and not have enough time on what to unlearn or stop.

What is an overused strength?

An overused strength refers to a quality or attribute that someone relies on excessively or inappropriately, to the point where it becomes a weakness. While strengths are generally seen as positive traits, when they are overused or applied without considering the context or situation, they can have negative consequences and emotions.

Some examples of overused strengths include attention to detail, confidence, independence.

Why is it important not to overuse your strengths?

Because you face a high cost and a series of unintended consequences caused by overusing your strengths, such as:

$

High stress

$

Burnout

$

Negativity

$

Reduced energy
